Why Budget Comes First
YES... Before the Dress, the Venue, or the Pinterest Board
It’s so tempting to dive straight into the fun parts of wedding planning ~ scrolling through inspiration photos, touring venues, tasting cakes. And while those moments are exciting, skipping one crucial step at the very beginning can lead to unnecessary stress down the road.
That step? Setting your budget.
Your budget is the foundation for every decision you’ll make. Without it, it’s easy to fall in love with options that may not align with your financial comfort zone. And once your heart is set on something, it can be hard (and sometimes heartbreaking) to pivot.
Starting with a budget does a few really important things:
1. It Gives You Clarity
When you know your overall number, you can begin to allocate funds to what matters most ~ whether that’s photography, food, music, or an unforgettable guest experience.
2. It Helps You Prioritize
Every couple is different. Some care deeply about a live band; others dream of an incredible culinary experience or over-the-top florals. A budget helps you say, “This is where we want to invest,” without guilt.
3. It Reduces Stress (A Lot)
Weddings should be joyful. A clear budget prevents last-minute surprises, overspending, and tough financial conversations later in the process.
4. It Builds Better Vendor Relationships
When you’re upfront about your budget, vendors can guide you toward options that truly fit. It creates a collaborative, transparent planning experience from the start.
A Little Wisdom from Colleen
If Colleen could sit down with every newly engaged couple, she’d gently remind them of this:
“Dream big ~ but plan smart. Your wedding should feel like you, not like financial pressure.”
At Richwood on the River, the goal has always been to help couples create something beautiful without losing sight of what matters most. And that starts with a plan that supports your vision ~ not stretches you beyond it.
Where to Begin
Before booking a single vendor, take some time to:
- Have an honest conversation about your total budget
- Determine who (if anyone) is contributing financially
- Identify your top 3 priorities as a couple
- Leave a little room for the unexpected (because there’s always something!)
From there, everything else becomes easier ~ and a lot more enjoyable.
Your wedding journey should feel exciting, not overwhelming. And with the right foundation in place, it can be exactly that.
At Richwood on the River, Colleen Sutton and her team are here to walk alongside you every step of the way ~ helping you turn your vision into a celebration that feels effortless, meaningful, and entirely your own.

Where to Begin: The First Wedding Vendors You Should Book
From a Venue Owner’s Perspective
One of the very first questions I hear from newly engaged couples is, “Where do we even start?” And honestly—it’s a great question. Wedding planning is exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming if you don’t know what comes first.
After hosting countless weddings here at Richwood on the River, I’ve seen firsthand how the order in which you book your vendors can shape your entire planning experience. So let’s simplify it and talk about the first vendors you should consider securing as you begin your journey.
1. Wedding Planner (If You Want One—Start Here)
If you’re dreaming of having a wedding planner—especially full-service coordination—this should absolutely be your first hire. In many cases, couples bring a planner on board immediately after getting engaged.
Why? Because a great planner doesn’t just organize details—they help you build your entire vision from the ground up. They can guide you in selecting the perfect venue, connect you with trusted vendors, and help you avoid costly missteps. Think of them as your advocate, your sounding board, and your calm in the chaos.
If having a seamless, supported planning experience is important to you, don’t wait on this one.
2. Venue (Often Guided by Your Planner)
While I may be a little biased here, your venue is truly the foundation of your wedding. It sets the tone, the style, the capacity, and even influences your vendor options.
If you’re working with a planner, they’ll help you narrow down venues that fit your vision and budget. If not, this may be your first big decision. Either way, once your date and location are secured, everything else begins to fall into place.
3. Caterer (Because Food Matters More Than You Think)
Catering is one of the most memorable parts of any wedding—for better or worse. Guests may forget your napkin color, but they will absolutely remember the meal.
Some venues (like ours) may offer in-house or preferred catering options, while others require you to bring in your own. Either way, prioritize this early. The best caterers book quickly, and they play a huge role in your guest experience.
4. Photographer (Especially If You Have “The One” in Mind)
Your wedding day will go by in a blur—but your photos are what you’ll have forever.
If there’s a photographer whose work you love, don’t hesitate. Many sought-after photographers book a year or more in advance, especially for peak wedding seasons. This is one vendor where style and personality really matter, so when you find the right fit, secure them early.
5. Music (Setting the Energy for Your Entire Day)
Whether you’re envisioning a live band, a DJ, or something unique, your music sets the tone for your celebration.
From your ceremony processional to your last dance, music creates the atmosphere and keeps your guests engaged. Like photographers, popular DJs and bands book quickly—so once you have your date and venue, this should be high on your list.
A Final Thought
Wedding planning doesn’t have to feel overwhelming when you take it step by step. Start with the vendors who shape the biggest pieces of your day—your planner, venue, caterer, photographer, and music—and everything else will begin to fall into place.
And remember, this season should be joyful. Surround yourself with professionals who not only do great work but also make you feel confident and cared for along the way.
If you’re just beginning your planning journey, take a deep breath—you’re right where you’re supposed to be.
Warmly,
Colleen
